Women's Lacrosse Loses To Bucknell, 18-5

-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team could not Overcome a slow start and fell to Bucknell, 18-5, on Monday night at “SpringFling” at the Village Park Complex.

Long Island (0-3) fell behind 6-0 in the opening period before senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) opened the scoring for LIU. Sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) cut the deficit to 6-2 and following a goal by Bucknell, the Blackbirds managed to keep the deficit at four when junior Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) scored just before halftime off an assist from senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.).

The Blackbirds continued their momentum after the intermission when freshman Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) made it a 7-4 game with 28:26 to play. The Bison responded however, by rattling off 11-straight goals and putting the game out of reach. LIU got a late goal from Scheerer with one second remaining to finish the scoring and provide the final margin.

Sophomore Kim Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) had a strong game in net for the Blackbirds, recording 22 saves.

Bucknell (1-3) was led in scoring by Chelsea Peters and Carol Donahue with four goals apiece. Peters scored three of her goals in the first half, helping the Bison jump out to an early lead they would not relinquish.

The Blackbirds wrap-up their Florida trip on Wednesday, March 14, with a 12:00 p.m. match against Marist.
