-- Senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) and freshman Elise Victoria (Baltimore, Md.) each tallied seven goals and an assist to lead the Long Island University women’s lacrosse team past Howard, 24-17, on Wednesday afternoon at LIU Field. Rizzo and Victoria tied the school’s single-game record for goals in a game, while the Blackbirds set a team record for goals scored.

The Blackbirds (2-6) opened the scoring early after Victoria posted an unassisted goal just 28 seconds into the contest. Howard roared back with two straight goals in the span of 13 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Megan Fitzgerald tied the game at 28:45 and Sakita Holley gave the Bison the lead.

LIU took the lead back on goals from Victoria and sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.). After Howard tied the game, LIU rattled off three straight goals to take the lead for good. Victoria capped the run with her third goal of the game to make it 6-3. The teams alternated the next three scores, before the Blackbirds rattled off three straight goals, capped by another score from Victoria to make it 10-5 at the 9:00 mark.

Funk and Rizzo each scored with under three minutes to play in the half to make to give LIU a five-goal cushion, but Howard got two scores inside the two-minute mark and made the halftime score 12-9.

Howard (1-5) opened the second half with a goal from Shannon Morris just 29 seconds into play to make it 12-10, but that was as close as it got the rest of the way. Freshman Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) and Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) pushed the lead back to 14-10. Rizzo scored consecutive goals for LIU off of assists from senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) to make it 18-13 at the 14:28 mark.

Howard answered with a pair of goals from Fitzgerald and Alana Webb, but Rizzo scored off another pass from McCormick to make it 19-15. The Bison added another goal, before Rizzo’s fourth-straight goal for LIU sparked a run of four straight to push the lead to 23-16. Howard added a late goal from Sakita Holley and LIU got a free position shot from McCormick for the final tally.

Sophomore Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) made 13 saves for the Blackbirds. McCormick finished with five assists and freshman Jillian Maricondo (Levittown, N.Y.) added four more helpers. Long Island held a 45-43 advantage in shots and had 16 ground balls off 23 Howard turnovers.

Long Island travels to Staten Island on Sunday, April 1, for a noon matchup against Northeast Conference foe Wagner.
