3/14/07-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team had a second half comeback fall short against Marist, losing 14-7 on Wednesday afternoon at “SpringFling” at the Village Park Complex.

Long Island (0-4) fell behind 3-0 early on before senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) took a pass from junior Samantha Fischbeck (Baltimore, Md.) got LIU on the board at the 21:37 mark. The Blackbirds and Red Foxes alternated the next four goals, with LIU getting scores from senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) and freshman Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) to make it 5-3. Marist cushioned its lead going into halftime however, as Lindsey Diener tallied two goals in the final five minutes to make it 7-3 at the break.

The Blackbirds came out in the second half and took control of the game early on, scoring three quick goals. Rizzo opened the scoring with a nice one-time goal from sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) at the 28:50 mark. Following a goal from the Red Foxes, McCormick notched a score off a pass from Wienckowski and Rizzo had an unassisted effort at the 23:48 mark to make it 8-6.

Marist (2-1) took a timeout to slow the momentum and responded by rattling off the next four goals. Two of the scores came from Stephanie Garland to make it 12-6 with 7:35 remaining. LIU got one of those goals back after McCormick picked up a rebound in front of the net and scored with 6:35 remaining to make it 12-7. However, the Red Foxes tacked on two late goals and Liz Burkhard made several key saves to hold off the Blackbirds, 14-7.

McCormick and Rizzo led the way for Long Island with three goals and an assist each. Wienckowski added a goal and an assist. Diener led Marist with three goals, while Liz Falco, Kate Noftsker and Ali Carnabuci each had two goals.

Sophomore Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) made 13 saves for the Blackbirds, while Burkhard finished with 10 saves for Marist.

The Blackbirds return to action on Wednesday, March 21, with a 4:00 p.m. matchup with Iona at LIU Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.
