4/22/07 --
The Long Island women’s lacrosse
team finished its regular season with a 16-9 loss to Monmouth
on Sunday afternoon
at
LIU Field. The Blackbirds took the lead early in the second
half of a back-and-forth affair, but a 7-0 second half run
by the Hawks was too much to overcome for the home team.
Prior to the game, LIU honored the three seniors on its roster;
Kelly Betancur (Orlando, Fla.), Jackie McCormick (Liverpool,
N.Y.) and Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.).
The two teams started slowly before Monmouth got on the board
at the 23:58 mark on a goal by Colleen Burg. The Hawks pushed
the lead to 3-0 before the Blackbirds game alive. LIU stormed
back with a pair of goals from Rizzo, followed by a score by
freshman Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) to tie the game
at the 9:49 mark.
Long Island (6-11, 3-5 NEC) took the lead briefly at the 8:15
mark when McCormick fed freshman Christie Wienckowski (Newton
Square, Pa.) to make it 4-3. Monmouth (12-4, 6-1 NEC) came back
with a run of three straight scores to go ahead 6-4. The Hawks
finished the run on a free position shot by Ashley Waldman.
LIU came back with a goal from McCormick, set up by Rizzo at
the 4:43 mark. Monmouth scored nine seconds later, but the Blackbirds
responded with two goals before halftime. Junior Sam Fischbeck
(Baltimore, Md.) took a pass from McCormick to make it 7-6 at
the 4:18 mark, before Scheerer tied it on an unassisted effort
with 1:18 to play in the first half.
Long Island took an 8-7 lead just 38 seconds into the second
half on an unassisted effort by Rizzo, but that was the last
lead LIU held as Monmouth ran off the next seven scores. Carolyn
Raveia tied the game at 27:42 and a goal just 10 seconds later
by Megan Nutter gave the Hawks the lead for good. Nutter and
Waldman had two goals apiece during the run and a score by Ali
Pollock with 5:49 to play pushed the lead to 14-7.
Rizzo snapped the scoring streak, by getting Long Island back
on the board with an unassisted effort at the 5:29 mark to make
it 14-9. Monmouth added a pair of late goals from Raveia and
Nutter for the final tally.
Rizzo finished with four goals and an assist to lead LIU, while
McCormick added a goal and two assists. Scheerer chipped in with
a pair of goals. Raveia had four goals and two assists, while
Waldman added four goals and an assist for Monmouth.
The Hawks held a 40-36 advantage in shots. Sophomore Kimberly
Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) made 11 saves for LIU, while Monica Johnson
had 18 saves for Monmouth.
The Blackbirds finished the season with a season-best six wins
this season and will return 15 letterwinners next season.
