Freshman Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) was named the women’s lacrosse
Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 22 after helping
Long Island University post a 1-2 record last week. Scheerer had a career day
in LIU’s 17-13 win at Binghamton on April 19, helping the Blackbirds establish
a team-record for single-season victories.
Scheerer helped LIU race past Binghamton with a four-goal, one-assist
performance at Binghamton on April 19. The rookie midfielder
set a career-high with the four goals, including a crucial second-half
tally that sparked a 9-1 run that helped the Blackbirds pull
away for the win. She also matched a career-high with four groundballs
and also corralled three draw controls.
Scheerer finished the week with six goals, six
groundballs, seven draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Scheerer
notched two goals in LIU’s season-ending defeat to Monmouth
on Sunday.
In her rookie season, Scheerer established herself
as an emerging offensive force for LIU. She finished fourth
on the team with
25 goals and two assists for 27 points. Scheerer was second on
the team with 35 draw controls and contributed 21 ground balls
and eight caused turnovers. She also had the game-winning goal
in LIU’s 12-11 victory over Iona on March 22.
The Blackbirds finished the season with a 6-11 record overall,
setting a new program record for victories. LIU posted a 3-5
mark in NEC play, finishing in sixth place.
