Lacrosse Falls to Sacred Heart, 12-8

4/1/2005 -- Sophomore Kayleigh Graves (Orlando, Fla.) scored three goals and added an assist but it was not enough as Long Island was defeated, 12-8, by Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference women’s lacrosse action this afternoon.

LIU started out hot as junior Chrissie Carleton (Jackson, N.J.) scored 2:32 into the game. Just over one minute later, Carleton received a dish from sophomore Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) and buried her second goal of the game to give the Blackbirds a 2-0 advantage.

The Pioneers responded with Natalie Smith’s goal at the 25:07 mark. LIU extended the lead to 3-1 as Rizzo beat Sacred Heart goalkeeper Maggie Brauer with 23:39 on the clock.

After another Pioneer goal, Graves took a pass from Rizzo and registered her first goal 18:40 into the contest. Less than a minute later junior Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot to give the Blackbirds (2-5, 1-1 NEC) a 5-2 edge.

Sacred Heart notched another goal at the 19:57 mark, but Graves recorded her second goal with 7:33 left to extend the LIU lead to 6-3. The Pioneers closed the half with three unanswered goals for a 6-6 halftime score.

Sacred Heart carried the momentum into the second stanza, registering three goals over the first 12:39 of the second stanza, opening a lead they would not relinquish. Graves completed her hat trick with 15:17 left in the game on a free-position goal.

Junior Elaine Bonilla (Pennsauken, N.J.) recorded her first goal of the season with 2:08 remaining in the contest, to close all scoring in the game. Heather Gureckis tallied four goals for the Pioneers who improve to 6-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

Senior Patricia Parker (Long Branch, N.J.) suffered the loss for LIU, making seven saves. The teams each registered 25 shots and LIU held a 20-19 advantage in ground balls. Freshman Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) was a defensive force for the Blackbirds as she had a team-high four caused turnovers. Lopez paced LIU with six ground balls.

The Blackbirds continue NEC play as they travel to Quinnipiac on Sunday for a 12:00 game.
