Men's Basketball Drops NEC Opener to Mount St. Mary's, 73-57; Morkeliunas Scores 16

1/5/06 -- Sophomore forward Paska Morkelinas (Kaunas, Lithuania) tied a season-high with 16 points but it was not enough as Long Island University dropped a 73-57 decision to Mount St Mary’s on Thursday evening at Schwartz Center.

LIU junior forward Esa Maki-Tulokas (Forssa, Finland) had 12 points for the Blackbirds (3-7, 0-1 NEC). Mount freshman Joey Butler scored a career-best 16 points and teammate Landy Thompson added his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Seven lead changes and six ties highlighted the first ten minutes of action as neither team led by more than three points. LIU took its last lead of the game, 20-18, at the 9:26 mark as a pair of free throws from Morkeliunas. The Mount scored 18 of the game’s next 25 points to take a 36-27 lead at the break.

With 14:45 showing in the second half, the Blackbirds cut the advantage to 48-40 on a three-pointer by Aubin Scott. The Mountaineers htitleed LIU’s momentum, scoring the next five points to lead by double figures the rest of the way.

LIU hosts Central Connecticut State (5-5, 1-0) on Saturday, January 7 at 4:00 p.m.
