Jaytornah Wisseh Named Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week

2/5/07-- Long Island University freshman guard Jaytornah Wisseh (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 4.

Wisseh earned his first individual award of the year after leading Long Island in scoring last week with a 20.0 per game average. The Brooklyn native shot 57.9 percent from the field and added 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals in a pair of games.

He opened the week with 11 points, a career-high seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals in an 80-77 loss to Wagner on Tuesday. On Friday at Sacred Heart, he exploded for a career-high 29 points, with six boards, two assists and two steals in an 80-72 setback. Wisseh went 7-of-11 from the floor and hit 13-of-16 from the foul line. His point total was a single-game high for an LIU player this season and was the most by an NEC freshman since St. Francis (N.Y.)’s John Quintana scored 31 on February 22, 2003.

On the season, Wisseh is averaging 8.3 points per game and is leading the Blackbirds with 2.7 assists per game and 1.2 steals per game.

Long Island takes on Central Connecticut State in a Northeast Conference battle on Monday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
