Men's Basketball Falls at Hartford, 74-60

12/11/04 -Long Island saw its two-game win streak htitleed, falling 74-60 to the University of Hartford on Saturday at the Reich Family Pavilion. Sophomore guard Evan Meekins (E. Providence, R.I.) paced the Blackbirds with 17 points, 14 in the first half.

The Hawks (2-3) jumped out to a 20-13 advantage midway through the first half. The Blackbirds (3-3) roared back, scoring the game’s next 10 points. Freshman guard Randy Jones (West Palm Beach, Fla.) converted two free throws to give LIU a 23-20 lead with 7:45 remaining in the half.

A Meekins 3-pointer, his fourth of the game, gave the Blackbirds their largest edge, 26-21 at the 6:36 mark. The momentum shifted to Hartford’s favor, as it converted seven of its last eight field goals to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room.

With Hartford leading 48-43, LIU reeled off six straight points to take its first lead of the second half. Sophomore James Williams (DeSoto, Texas) converted a fast break lay-up off a steal from Jones to push LIU to the 49-48 lead.

Hartford answered, seizing control on a lay-up and subsequent free throw from Bo Taylor and never relinquished it. The Blackbirds went nearly seven minutes without a field goal as the Hawks increased the lead to double digits.

The Blackbirds, who had hit 22 3-point field goals in the previous two contests, registered just five triples in the game. They went 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the second half, shooting 23.8 percent for the game.

Jones notched his third straight game in double figures, scoring 12 points. Bell added 11 for the Blackbirds
