Randy Jones Named NEC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week a Second Time

2/28/05 -- Long Island University freshman Randy Jones (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was tabbed Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

Jones averaged 16.0 points and 3.0 assists per game, shot 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the floor and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from 3-point range last week in a pair of victories.

In his best offensive game of the season, Jones netted a career-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, on Thursday as LIU (13-14, 10-8 NEC) rolled past Robert Morris, 82-58, in the final regular season game at Schwartz Center.

Two nights later, Jones netted 10 points, including two key 3-pointers in a 16-1 second-half run, and four assists as LIU posted its fourth victory in five games, 72-66 at Mount St. Mary's.

Jones leads all NEC freshman and ranks seventh in the conference with 3.9 assists per game. He also ranks second on the Blackbirds with 9.1 points per contest.

Jones previously was cited by the conference December 6, two weeks after freshman Kellen Allen (Mansfield, Texas) earned the award November 22.

LIU clinched the No. 4 seed in the NEC Tournament and a home game Thursday against fifth-seeded St. Francis (PA) at 7:00 pm. It will be the first NEC Tournament game at Schwartz Center since 1998.
