Men's Soccer falls to American, 3-0, at the NCAA Tournament

11/20/04 -- Long Island University, making its first NCAA appearance since 1986, dropped a 3-0 decision to American University in the opening round of the College Cup at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C.

Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Shawn Kuykendall, netted the first goal -a slow roller - off a rebound in the 24th minute for a 1-0 advantage. Senior goalkeeper Ryszard Gorski (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) deflected the first shot from Sal Caccavale, but could not recover in time to stop the second attempt which rolled off the tip of his hands.

AU struck again in the 40th minute as Kuykendall sent a ball deep to Sean Albright. Gorski punched the shot out, but Albright was there to head the rebound in for a 2-0 advantage at the half. LIU was on the wrong end of an 8-3 shots margin and was unable to force a corner kick in the first half.

LIU attempted to build momentum the second half. The Blackbirds worked the ball down low with a series of quick passes in the that finished with Ricardo Ordain (Brooklyn, N.Y.) snapping a quick shot from in front that sailed three feet wide of the left post in the 78th minute.

.Senior Norman LeVesque (Yucaipa, Calif.) and midfielder Lior Roisman (Haifa, Israel) paced the Blackbirds with two shots each.

Gorski closed the game with eight saves for LIU, which was making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986. Thomas Myers made five saves for the Eagles as the Blackbirds were out shot 17-8 in the contest.
