Men's Soccer Releases 2007 Schedule
4/23/07 --The Long Island University men’s soccer team announced its 2007 schedule, which features seven home games, on Monday afternoon. The slate features three games on the West Coast and a road tilt with defending Northeast Conference champion Monmouth.

The Blackbirds, who finished last year with a 4-11-2 record, open up with games against Cal-State Fullerton and UC Irvine in the UC Irvine Tournament in Irvine, Calif., on Aug. 31-Sept. 2. LIU entertained the Anteaters last season at the LIU Soccer Classic and fell, 4-0. The team remains out west for a match against Division II power Cal-State Bakersfield on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m.

The season’s first home contest will be a battle of New York City schools as Manhattan comes to Brooklyn on Sept. 11 for a 4:00 p.m. start. Long Island will host the University of San Diego in another non-conference home game on Sept. 16. The Toreros finished last year 10-8-1 and took eventual NCAA tournament quarterfinalist Santa Clara to overtime before falling, 2-1.(more)

Former Blackbird Juan Diego Chiavarini Starring Professionally in Italy

1/5/07 -- Former LIU men's soccer standout Juan Diego Chiavarini (Santa Fe, Argentina) has turned a stellar career in the collegiate ranks into a soccer career at one of the highest levels in Italy.

A two-time All-Northeast Conference selection, including a first-team nod in 2000, Chiavarini has played in Italy's Serie D for the past two seasons. After a season with AS Morolo Calcio, his rights were bought by Terracina FC.

Serie D is the top level of the Italian non-professional soccer association called Lega Nazionale Dilettanti. The association itself represents over a million soccer players and thousands of soccer teams. Ranking below Serie C2 (the fourth and last professional league), Serie D is considered the fifth-ranked league in Italy. (more)
