(Game 1 - vs. Alabama) (Game 2 - vs. Florida International)

2/19/06 -- The Long Island University softball team opened its season in Boca Raton, Fla. for the Florida Atlantic Dunkin' Donuts Classic on Friday and dropped both contests.

Against nationally-ranked Alabama on Friday morning, LIU dropped a 5-1 decision. The Crimson Tide, ranked sixth in the country, got on the board early with three runs, two unearned, in the first inning.

Alabama would tack on two more runs in the fifth inning before sophomore Brittany Murphy (Los Alamitos, Calif.) doubled and scored on a wild pitch for the Blackbirds lone run in the sixth.

Freshman Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) made her first collegiate start, allowing three earned runs over seven innings in the loss. Sophomore Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) went 1-for-2 with a double.

In the afternoon, Florida International jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. The Golden Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third frame.

A one-out triple by Murphy scored senior Alissa Villanueva (Pacoima, Calif.) to cut the LIU deficit to two, 3-1, in the top of the fourth.

Following a walk by Villanueva and a single by Murphy, senior Leah Glenn singled home the Blackbirds second run of the game in the top half of the sixth and pulled LIU to within one, 3-2.

The Golden Panthers would come back in the bottom half and plate two insurance runs, courtesy of a two-run inside-the-park home run by Deomni Murray.

Murphy finished with two hits and an RBI. Junior Holly Erwin (Riverside, Calif.) tallied three hits, including a double, in the loss. Giles pitched her second consecutive complete game of the day, giving up five runs over six innings for the Blackbirds.

LIU continues pool play against Mississippi and Florida Atlantic on Saturday.
