3/29/06 -- Long Island University softball dropped its home opener on Wednesday evening, falling to Hofstra, 5-1, at LIU Field. The Blackbirds fall to 13-14 while the Pride move to 15-7 on the season.

With a runner on second in the first inning, junior Ashley Lane put Hofstra on the board with her fourth home run of the season and giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

LIU junior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) cut the lead to one in the fourth, sending a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence. The homer was her third of the year.

Lane put distance between the teams, drilling her second two-run homer of the contest to push the Pride to a 4-1 edge. They added an insurance run in the seventh.

The Blackbirds had six hits with two of those coming from sophomore Celina Castillo (Redwood City, Calif.). They, however, left eight runners stranded.

Freshman Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) had a season-high eight strikeouts in the loss.

The Blackbirds open Northeast Conference play on Friday, March 31, entertaining Sacred Heart. Doubleheader action begins at 2:30 p.m.
