4/2/06 -- Senior pitcher Jessica Busick (Milpitas, Calif.) registered her second shutout of the season to help lift Long Island University to a 3-0 victory over Monmouth in the second game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

In the first game, Monmouth overcame a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for the 5-4 win.

Sophomore Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) went 4-for-8 in the twinbill with a run scored and an RBI for the Blackbirds.

In game two, the Blackbirds got on the board first with a run in the second. A bunt single by senior Leah Glenn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) created havoc for the Monmouth defense, as third baseman Sue Micchelli committed an error on the throw that allowed junior Holly Erwin to score the game’s first run.

The run proved to be all the support that Busick needed, as the senior struck out six batters while allowing one walk and scattering seven hits over seven in the circle. LIU tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh inning to close the scoring.

Erwin, V. Mejia and sophomore Celina Castillo (Redwood City, Calif.) each had two hits in the second game for the Blackbirds.

After a run in the fourth inning gave LIU a 1-0 advantage in game one, the Blackbirds scored three times in the fifth. A single by V. Mejia scored Britnee Edwards (Mesa, Ariz.) and sophomore Alyssa Winslow (San Jacinto, Calif.) followed with a bases-loaded single to center that scored two more.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, freshman Nichole Alvarez started Monmouth’s rally by roping a single to centerfield. Micchelli followed with her second hit of the day, a double down the left field line to score the Hawk’s first run. Junior Dawn Gilchrist singled to set the table for Heather Gordon, who blasted her fourth homer of the year over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4. An unearned run would cross home plate three batters later to give Monmouth the edge.

LIU had one final shot in the top of the seventh, but senior Krystal Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) grounded out to second with a runner on second to end the game.

LIU hosts Radford on Friday, April 7 for a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m.
