4/14/06 -- The Long Island University softball team split a pair of games against Northeast Conference rival Robert Morris on Friday afternoon in Moon Township, Pa. After falling 4-0 in the first game, the Blackbirds took game two, 6-2.

In game two, LIU scored three runs on four hits in the first inning. Sophomore Celina Castillo (Redwood City, Calif.) led off with a home run to right center. The next batter, classmate Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.), drilled a homer of her own –her fourth of the season- to give the Blackbirds a 2-0 lead.

Junior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) followed with a single to center and advanced to second on a hit by Krystal Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.). Junior Holly Erwin (Riverside, Calif.) brought Gillespie home on a single into left, pushing LIU to a 3-0 advantage.

In the fifth frame, three Blackbirds notched home runs to seal the win. Sophomore Alyssa Winslow (San Jacinto, Calif.), Erwin, and Brittany Murphy (Los Alamitos, Calif.) each went long distance off Brenna Reed to give LIU a 6-0 cushion.

The Colonials tallied two runs in the sixth inning.

Jessica Busick (Milpitas, Calif.) garnered the victory for Long Island from the pitcher's circle to improve to 6-4, scattering nine hits in six innings of work while striking out four and walking one. Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) came on in the bottom of the seventh to retire the final three hitters for the Blackbirds.

Castillo and Erwin each recorded three hits in the game two win for Long Island, as Castillo finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Erwin finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

In game one, RMU’s Danielle Cohen allowed only two hits in a 4-0 win. Seniors Crystal Herman and Keri Meyer hit back-to-back- home runs to give the Colonials a 2-0 head start.

The home team added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking the first game.

The Blackbirds will face St. Francis (Pa.) in a NEC doubleheader on Saturday, April 15. First pitch is at 1:00 pm.
