4/11/06 --Long Island University dropped both games of a doubleheader to Seton Hall in collegiate softball action on Tuesday evening at LIU Field. The Blackbirds fell 6-5 in game one and were beaten 11-5 in the second contest.

LIU fell behind 5-0 after a half-inning of play as a three-run home run by designated player Amanda Winn drove in the Pirates final three runs of the frame.

An unearned run in the bottom of the first got the Blackbirds on the board and a solo home run by junior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) made the score 5-2 in the third.

The Blackbirds kept chipping away as two runs in the sixth made the tally 6-4. Seniors Alissa Villanueva (Pacoima, Calif.) and Leah Glenn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each had RBI singles in the frame.

In the seventh, LIU got another solo homer from sophomore Alyssa Winslow (San Jacinto, Calif.) to make it 6-5 but could not score the equalizing run.

Winslow and Gillespie both had two hits to lead the offense for the Blackbirds. Winslow allowed only one run over her final six innings but suffered the loss.

In the second game, Seton Hall pounded out 17 hits and cruised to victory. LIU jumped out to the early advantage, as back-to-back homers by sophomores Celina Castillo (Redwood City, Calif.) and Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) to lead off the first gave the team a 2-0 lead.

The lead would last until the third inning, when the Pirates put three runs on the scoreboard. They would add two more in the fifth and six over the final two innings to secure the victory. Jenna Best went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the attack.

Castillo belted another home run in the seventh inning and went 2-for-3 in game two for the Blackbirds.

LIU continues Northeast Conference play on Friday, April 14 with a road doubleheader at Robert Morris.
