(Quinnipiac box score)
3/25/06 -- The
Long Island University softball team picked up a pair of non-conference
victories on Saturday afternoon, blanking Stony Brook, 1-0,
before coming from behind to defeat Quinnipiac, 4-2. The wins
improve the Blackbirds’ record to 12-12 overall.
Sophomore Celina Castillo (Redwood City, Calif.) belted a
solo home run to lead off the game in the top of the
first inning
against Stony Brook, providing all of the offense LIU would
need.
Freshman Jenny Giles (Clearwater, Fla.) was tremendous on the
mound, allowing only four hits and six base runners in seven
innings in the circle. Giles improved to 9-10 on the season.
Castillo’s first inning blast was one of only five hits
on the day for LIU. The Seahawks’ Angela Andrews matched
Giles for much of the game as she also allowed only six Blackbird
base runners to reach on the afternoon.
Stony Brook had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead,
but could not take advantage. Suzanne Turek and Kelsi Fanelli
led off the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, with doubles.
Giles was able to work out of trouble and prevent the Seahawks
from scoring the equalizer.
Sophomore Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) had a hit and reached
base twice for Long Island.
Against Quinnipiac, the Blackbirds saw the Bobcats score runs
in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Maria Browne
had an RBI single in the third to open the scoring. Kim Norman
connected on her fourth home run of the season to account for
Quinnipiac’s second run.
After scoring one in the bottom of the fourth to cut the margin
in half, LIU ripped off three runs in the bottom of the fifth
to take command. Junior Holly Erwin had a two-out, bases loaded
single that scored two and gave the Blackbirds a 4-2 advantage.
Senior Jessica Busick took over from there, shutting out the
Bobcats over the final two frames to pick up her third victory
of the season. Sophomore Alyssa Winslow went 2-for-2 with an
RBI and run scored while Krystal Mejia had an RBI single in
the fourth for LIU.
The Blackbirds face Fairfield on Sunday, Mar. 26 at 10:30 a.m.
as they continue play in the Stony Brook Invitational. The
championship and consolation round will begin at 3:30 p.m.
