4/14/07 -- Sophomore Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) extended her scoreless innings streak to 23 and picked up two victories in the circle as the Long Island University softball team pushed its winning streak to 12 with a doubleheader sweep of Central Connecticut State (16-0 and 5-1) on Saturday afternoon at LIU Field.

Junior Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) had a big day at the plate, going 5-for-6 over the two games with a home run, double and four RBIs. Senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) had three hits in the first game and one more in the second to extend her hitting streak to 15 games.

In the first contest, the Blackbirds scored early and often as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first two frames. Gillespie had three hits and scored twice during the span while freshman Raylene Asman (Escondido, Calif.) drove in three on her team-leading fourth home run of the year.

In the third, Long Island exploded for seven more with Mejia notching two hits in the frame, including a two-run, opposite-field double. Asman also had a run-scoring two-base hit in the inning and leads the team with 21 runs batted in.
The offensive outburst was more than enough for Giles, who scattered six hits while striking out four over five.

The second game saw the Blackbirds come out swinging early once again as a solo home run by Mejia gave them an early 1-0 lead. But Central fought back with a run in the second and looked poised to do more damage with the bases loaded and nobody out. But freshman hurler Blaire Porter (Redmond, Wash.) struck out Melissa Caron, induced a ground ball that led to the lead runner being cut down at the plate and popped up Karen Costes to shut down the potential rally.

The score remained tied until the fourth when freshman Brynn Lewis (Woodinville, Wash.) connected on a grand slam over the left field wall that gave LIU the lead for good. Giles relieved Porter in the top of the fourth and was nearly unhittable, allowing only a bunt single with two outs in the second to pick up her 12th win of the year.

Due to the threat of rainy weather, the doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, April 15 with Quinnipiac has been rescheduled for Monday, April 16, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
