2/18/07 -- Sophomore Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) turned in an impressive performance, allowing only two hits and four base runners in total as the Long Island University softball team defeated Florida Atlantic, 2-1, in the final day of competition at the Dunkin' Donuts Classic on Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla.

Giles allowed a solo home run in the second inning, then limited the Owls to just one hit the rest of the way, a single in the fifth inning. The victory improves the righthander's mark to 2-1 on the season.

The Blackbirds got on the scoredboard quickly, as senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) started a two-out rally in the first inning with a single to left field. Gillespie finished the day going 3-for-4 from the plate and is batting .571 through five games this season.

After Gillespie stole second and sophomore Renae Beachman (Eagle Rock, Calif.) drew a walk, junior Celina Castillo (Bay Area, Calif.) ripped an opposite field, two-run double to left to give Long Island a 2-0 lead.

A solo home run by Jen Musillo in the second inning was the only run allowed by Giles, who also struck out three batters and moved into seventh place on the all-time LIU career strikeout list.

Meghan Doonan suffered the loss for FAU, her first of the season, after allowing seven hits in seven innings.

LIU will travel to Palm Springs, Calif. for the prestigious Palm Springs Invitational on Feb. 23-25. The Blackbirds will face Oklahoma State on the first day of competition at 10:30 a.m. PST.
