4/16/07 --
Sophomore Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) has been named the
Northeast Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week as announced
by the conference on Monday. Giles went 3-0 in the circle this
past week and posted an unblemished 0.00 ERA over 16 innings
of
work.
Winning the award for the fourth
time in her young career, Giles helped the Blackbirds extend
their winning streak to 12 games and extend her consecutive
scoreless-innings streak to 23 innings. She pitched seven innings
of shutout ball, scattering five hits and striking out seven
in a 4-0 victory over Seton Hall on Wednesday.
In a doubleheader sweep of Central
Connecticut State, Giles threw her third straight complete-game
shutout in a 16-0 rout in game one and then entered in relief
in game two and was nearly unhittable. The Florida product
allowed only a two-out bunt base hit in the seventh inning
over four innings to pick up her 12th win of the year.
On the season, Giles has compiled
a 12-6 record with a 1.92 ERA and 84 strikeouts. Her 260 career
strikeouts rank her third on LIU's all-time list and her 34
victories places her one shy of ninth place in the LIU annals.
Long Island returns to the diamond
on Tuesday, April 17 in a conference doubleheader at Fairleigh
Dickinson scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
