3/19/07 --
For the second time this season, senior Randi Gillespie (San
Jose, Calif.) has been named the Northeast Conference Player
of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. It
marks
the fifth time in her career that she has received a weekly
honor.
Gillespie batted .500 over eight games during the week (15-for-30)
and notched two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. She also
tallied six multi-hit games in that span and now has 11 this
year.
The San Jose, Calif. native went
a perfect 3-for-3 in the Blackbirds’ 4-1
victory over George Mason and again had three hits, scored a
run and added an RBI in a 3-1 win against conference foe Quinnipiac.
Later in the week against Kent State, her solo home run in the
fourth inning knotted the game at 1-1 and gave the first baseman
21 for her career, tying her for second on the all-time LIU career
home run list.
For the season, the former NEC Player of the Year is batting
a robust .434 and leads the squad in hits (33), runs scored (16)
and doubles (7) and is tied for the lead in RBIs (8).
Long Island returns to the Northeast this weekend to compete
in the Stony Brook Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y. on March
24-25. The Blackbirds are scheduled to take on Fairfield in the
opener at 12:30 p.m.
