After batting .643 over four games and nearly hitting
for the cycle against Wagner, senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose,
Calif.) was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week
for the week ending April 2. For Gillespie, it marks the third
time this season she has received the award and sixth such
occasion of her career.
The senior totaled seven runs,
two doubles, two home runs, two stolen bases and a pair of
RBI’s over
her four games this week and is now batting an NEC-best .455
for the season. The San Jose, Calif. native also leads the conference
in on-base percentage (.530) and hits (46) and is tied
for
first
in homeruns
(4) and ranks second in slugging percentage (.673).
Against Wagner on Saturday, Gillespie
went 5-for-8 over the two games as she helped the Blackbirds
start off conference play with a pair of victories. Her solo
home run in the first game got LIU on the board and cut the
Seahawks' lead to 2-1 in the fifth.
In the second game, she
led off the
contest with another solo shot and tallied two doubles and
a single en route to her first four-hit game this season.
She leads the team with 14 multi-hit games and is currently
in the
midst of a 10-game hitting streak.
Long Island looks to extend its
season-best seven game winning streak this weekend with a pair
of road conference doubleheaders. The Blackbirds face Fairleigh
Dickinson on Friday, April 6 and then continue on to play Sacred
Heart on Saturday, April 7.
