4/24/07 -- The Long Island University softball team had its 18-game winning streak snapped by visiting Hofstra, 4-0, at LIU Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pride’s Courtney Oliver was able to keep the Blackbirds hitless over the full seven innings after being summoned from the bullpen after the original starter, Kayleigh Lotti, was injured in warm-ups.

Despite being no hit, Long Island had a prime opportunity to take the lead in the opening frame. Two walks to juniors Brittany Murphy (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Celina Castillo (Bay Area, Calif.) put two runners on with two down. Freshman Raylene Asman (Escondido, Calif.) stepped to the plate and hit a rocket that was snared in the air by Hofstra shortstop Pam Dreslinski to end the threat.

Freshman Blaire Porter (Redmond, Wash.) matched Oliver by keeping the Pride scoreless through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. A leadoff single by Casey Fee, who tallied three hits on the day, started things off. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Ashley Lane came through with an RBI single to score Fee and give Hofstra the lead. Porter had difficulty finding the strike zone afterwards, uncorking three wild pitches that lead to two more runs.

A run-scoring single by Fee in the seventh ended the scoring for the Pride, who notched their 30th win of the season (30-13).

Porter dropped to 11-11 on the year, striking out seven over the full seven innings.

The Blackbirds will look to rebound as they host Quinnipiac for a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 26 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The games will mark the final home games for seniors Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) and Holly Erwin (Riverside, Calif.).
