5/16/07 --
Three Long Island University softball players were named to
the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region
second team, as announced by the committee on Wednesday. Senior
Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.), junior Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke,
Va.) and sophomore
Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) were all selected by the NFCA
for their stellar seasons.
Gillespie earns all-region honors
for the third straight season after being named to the first
team in each of the past two years. The California product
batted a career-high .450 this year and set a program record
for hits in a season (77), runs in a season (53) and recently
broke the school's all-time career home run record (28). The
two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Year also ranks
first in school history in single-season batting average, career
total bases, career slugging percentage, career on-base percentage
and is tied for the all-time hits record.
Giles was named to the second
team for the second consecutive year after compiling a 19-8
record to go along with a team-best 1.77 ERA. At one point
this season, the two-time NEC Pitcher of the Year held opponents
scoreless for 42 2/3 straight innings and had a streak of six
straight
shutout
decisions.
Mejia gets the nod as the second
team honoree at third base, where the left-handed hitter batted
.308 with three home runs and 30 RBIs. The junior earns her
first career all-region selection after ranking third on the
team in batting average. She also had 10 doubles this season,
which moved her into the top five in LIU annals.
The Blackbirds won their second
consecutive NEC Tournament on May 12 and earned the conference's
automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Long Island will
face Massachusetts in its opening game of the Amherst, Mass.
regional on Friday, May 18 at 4:30 p.m.
