4/26/07 -- Juniors Jessie DePippo (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Celina Castillo (Bay Area, Calif.) each hit three-run home runs as the Long Island University softball team bounced back from its first Northeast Conference loss in game one with an 11-2, run-rule victory over Quinnipiac in game two of an NEC doubleheader at LIU Field on Thursday evening.

In the first game, the Bobcats had three consecutive two-out hits in the first inning and hit a solo home run in the fifth to defeat the Blackbirds, 2-0. The opening-inning run also snapped sophomore Jenny Giles’ (Melbourne, Fla.) scoreless-innings streak at 42 2/3 innings.

After striking out the first batter of the game and getting the second to fly to left, Giles ran into trouble. Opposing pitcher Krista Seeman laced a single up the middle and first baseman Sammi Allendorfer followed with a slow dribbler down the third-base line for a second hit. Christine Bourdeau had the innings’ third straight hit through the left side to score Seeman and give Quinnipiac the 1-0 lead.

Seeman was solid in the circle as well, scattering five hits while striking out four to register her eighth win of the year. Long Island had opportunities to get on the board but stranded six runners in scoring position and eight overall. Senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) tallied two of the Blackbirds’ five hits, including her 16th double of the season in the seventh which ties her with Sonia Zapata for the top single-season total in LIU history.

In game two, the Blackbirds worked out of their scoring funk and exploded for five runs in the second inning. The big blow of the inning was Castillo’s towering three-run blast to right center that scored the final runs of the frame.

Freshman Raylene Asman (Escondido, Calif.) led off the third inning with a double down the left field line. After a walk to DePippo, sophomore Renae Beauchman (Eagle Rock, Calif.) drove both in with a double to left. Castillo scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and DePippo ended the game with her sixth home run of the year and second game-clincher. The junior catcher ended the second game of a doubleheader against St. John’s with a home run as well.

Freshman Blaire Porter (Redmond, Wash.) struck out six over six innings to pick up her 12th win of the year.

Long Island hits the road for its next two doubleheaders against Robert Morris and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, April 28 and 29, respectively.
