Softball Falls, 10-1, to No. 1 Arizona

3/14/05 -- The Long Island University softball team dropped its first game of the UNLV Rebel Tournament to number one ranked Arizona, 10-1, in college softball action at Las Vegas, Nev.

Junior Briana Mathiesen (Sylmar, Calif.) smashed a two-out double in the first inning to register the lone hit for the Blackbirds. LIU loaded the bases in the fifth on an error, a walk and a hit batter. Freshman Celina Castillo (Belmont, Calif.) grounded out to third to drive in junior Krystal Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.), cutting the Wildcats' lead to 10-1.

Senior Jackie Brown (Westminster, Calif.) tossed five innings for LIU (2-12), allowing 10 runs and 13 hits with three strikeouts. Taryne Mowat went the distance for Arizona (20-0), tossing five innings and yielding one run and one hit with five strikeouts.

The Blackbirds play a doubleheader Tuesday against Minnesota and UNLV. Game times are 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, respectively.
