-- Senior Briana Mathiesen (Sylmar, Calif.), and sophomores
Jessie DePippo (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Randi Gillespie
(San Jose, Calif.) were named first team All-Northeast Conference
and junior Krystal Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) was tabbed second
team all-league.
Mathiesen has been on a tear
for the Blackbirds, hitting
.323 overall with 27 RBI and a conference best 11 home runs. The
5-5 first baseman, who holds the school's single season and career
home run records (26), was a second team all-league pick in 2002
and a first-team selection last year.
DePippo, a second team All-NEC
pick at designated player last year as well its Rookie of the
Year, flourished this season at catcher. The 5-5 standout is
third for the Blackbirds with a .319 batting average and owns
a .993 fielding percentage with one error over 142 chances.
She hit .452 in league games with 11 RBI and had a 1.000 fielding
percentage over 69 chances.
Gillespie made her debut season
with LIU a memorable one as she leads the team with a .348
batting average and 48 hits along
with eight homers and 30 RBI. The 5-6 left fielder, who batted
.443 in conference games with 23 RBI, is sixth overall in the
league with a .580 slugging percentage.
Mejia, last year's NEC Player
of the Year and tournament MVP, is fifth on the squad with
a .310 batting average and also has four doubles, six homers
and 26 RBI. Mejia, who earned the award at shortstop but also
has seen action this season as LIU's designated player, leads
the team with a .489 batting average in league games to go
with 24 RBI.
The Blackbirds (21-26, 15-5 NEC)
were presented their awards at the league's annual banquet
in Moon Township, Pa. prior to the start of the NEC Tournament.
LIU is the number two seed and
on Friday will face third-seeded Wagner at 11:30 am. Host and
top seed Robert Morris opens play vs. fourth-seeded Quinnipiac. |
