5/14/05 -- Freshman Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) and senior Briana Mathiesen (Sylmar, Calif.) closed with three hits apiece for No. 2 seed Long Island, which was eliminated from the Northeast Conference Tournament with a 6-2 loss to No. 3 Wagner in Moon Township, Pa.

Mejia went 3-for-3 to close a monster weekend in which she batted 10-for-11 with three RBI over the three games. Mathiesen hit 3-for-4 today and 6-for-12 over the weekend.

LIU (22-28) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior Leah Glenn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had a one-out single and took second on a throwing error by shortstop Katie Stevens. Two batters later, Mathiesen laced an RBI single to left.

But the Seahawks (30-17) plated the next six runs to end the Blackbirds' two-year reign as NEC champions. Stevens' two-run single in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie, Kate Refsnyder lined a two-run double in the fifth to make it 5-1 and Courtney Gambetta added an RBI single later in the inning.

Junior Krystal Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) drilled an RBI single to left in the sixth to close the scoring. Mathiesen doubled in the seventh inning for LIU's 10th hit, marking the fifth straight game the team reached that plateau.

Westminster, Calif. senior Jackie Brown (13-14) gave the squad all she could, making her sixth start in the team's last seven outings. She permitted three runs -- two earned -- and five hits with a strikeout over five innings.

Dara Gadziala (8-3) gave up two runs -- one earned -- and 10 hits over seven innings for the Seahawks.
