4/4/05 --
Sophomore Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) today was named Northeast Conference
Softball Player of the Week after helping
lead Long
Island University to pair of victories Sunday over St. Francis
(PA).
The 5-6 infielder batted 4-for-8 against the Red Flash with
two home runs and five RBI as the Blackbirds (5-20, 2-0 NEC)
won by scores of 7-5 and 18-3.
Gillespie in game one gave her squad a vital insurance run,
belting a leadoff homer in the fifth inning as LIU built a 7-4
lead. In game two, the Blackbirds took control during an eight-run
second inning thanks to her grand slam to left field that gave
the team a 7-0 lead.
In her first season at LIU, Gillespie has given the squad an
immediate boost. She leads the team with a .301 batting average,
22 hits, five doubles, 12 RBI and five multi-hit contests. Gillespie,
the only Blackbird to start all 25 games this year, has seven
extra-base hits to her credit and is tied for the team lead with
12 runs.
Gillespie arrived after she was named to the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association (NFCA) Cal JC All-America team last year
for West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif. Also named to the
Easton All-America third team, she closed last year batting .479
with nine home runs and 61 RBI.
LIU returns to action Tuesday for an NEC doubleheader at St.
Francis (NY). First pitch is at 3:00 pm.
