(Baylor
boxscore) / (N. Illinois boxscore)
3/10/05 --
Senior Briana Mathiesen (Sylmar,
Calif.) rapped a two-run homer in the first game and doubled
in the second for Long Island, which suffered a 3-2 loss to Northern
Illinois and an 8-0 setback to ninth-ranked Baylor at the Speedline
Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
Against Northern Illinois, LIU
raced to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman
Celina Castillo (Belmont, Calif.) walked and was erased when
sophomore Randi Gillespie (Saratoga, Calif.) reached
on a fielder's choice. Mathiesen followed by clubbing her team-leading
fourth homer of the season down the left-field line.
The Huskies plated a run in the
second and two in the third to take the lead for good.
The Blackbirds had their chance
in the fifth inning. Freshman Brittany
Murphy (Los Alamitos, Calif.) singled, Castillo walked and
Gillespie singled to load the bases with none out. But Mathiesen
flied
out to
shallow
center, sophomore Jessie DePippo (Westlake Village, Calif.)
lined out to third and junior Alissa Villanueva (Pacoima, Calif.)
flied out to left.
Senior Jackie
Brown (Westminster, Calif.) permitted three runs and eight
hits over six innings for the Blackbirds.
LIU against Baylor was limited
to two hits against the 24-3 squad. Villanueva singled in the
second before Mathiesen's double in the fourth.
The Bears totaled four runs in
the third inning for a 5-0 lead and three more over the next
two innings. They would have plated more if not for a spectacular
diving catch by junior Leah Glenn (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
in the fifth.
Senior Chelsea Crosby (Reno,
Nev.) pitched effectively for LIU, permitting only three earned
runs over five innings and striking out three.
LIU faces Temple at 4:00 pm and
Central Florida at 6:00 pm. |
