Softball Falls In First Two at Palm Springs Classic

2/25/2005 -- Long Island lost both games 14-0, against Arizona State and Cal State Fullerton at the Palm Springs Classic on Friday.

In the first contest against Arizona State, junior Alissa Villanueva got the lone hit for the Blackbirds as they suffered their third loss of the season in five innings. Villanueva hit a lead-off single to start the third inning but LIU was unable to bring her home as Celina Castillo flied out to end the inning.

Senior Jackie Brown got the loss, going the distance for LIU, giving up 12 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out three. Ashley Werschky got the victory for Arizona State as she pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up one hit, no runs, one walk and struck out one.

Mindy Cowles went 2-for-3 and drove in 7, and Heidi Knabe went 3-for-3 scoring two runs and recording an RBI for the Sun Devils who improved to 8-2 on the season.

Long Island suffered its second 14-0 loss of the day to Cal State Fullerton in the second game. Freshman Celina Castillo registered a team-high two hits going 2-for-3 for the Blackbirds but it was not enough as LIU dropped to 0-4 on the season.

Marissa Marzon recorded the win for Fullerton as she pitched three full inning giving up three hits and no runs while fanning two. Senior Chelsea Crosby took the loss for the Blackbirds as she went the distance giving up eight hits and ten earned runs.

LIU will play Brigham Young and Oregon State on Saturday. Game times are slated for 4:00 and 6:30 eastern time.
