Softball Drops Three at Palm Springs Classic

2/26-27/2005 -- Long Island University dropped its final three games at the Palm Springs Classic this weekend in college softball action.

In a 4-2 loss to Brigham Young University on Saturday in the opening game, sophomore Randi Gillespie (Saratoga, Calif.) registered the first RBI of the game. She connected on a single to left, in the bottom of the third to plate freshman Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) and even the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the third, BYU posted two runs to regain the lead 3-1. Lauren Perry-Watson homered to center in the next frame to give the Cougars a 4-1 advantage.

Vanessa Mejia flied out to center in the top of the sixth, bringing home junior Alisa Villanueva to make it a two-run contest, but LIU would get no closer. Chelsea Crosby (Reno, Nev.) suffered her second loss of the season, allowing four earned runs on five hits and two strikeouts over six innings.

Senior Briana Mathiesen (Sylmar, Calif.) belted a lead-off homer in the fifth inning, to give the Blackbirds their lone run in a 12-1 loss to host Oregon State on Saturday. Senior Jackie Brown (Westminster, Calif.) fell to 0-2.

Mia Longfellow recorded four RBI’s going 2-for-3 for Oregon State. Kelly Peterson blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth with a double that brought home two runs and extended the Beaver’s lead to 11-0.

Mathiesen bashed a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth, against Ohio State on Sunday, to give LIU (0-7) its only two scores of the contest in an 11-2 loss. Crosby suffered her third loss of the season, allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks.

Jamie Juarez tallied her third win of the season for the Buckeyes, going the distance giving up two runs on one hit and fanning two. Liz Caputo and Ashley Cutliff both knocked in three for Ohio State who improved to 5-5 on the season.

LIU travels to Clearwater, Florida to compete in the Speedline Invitational from March 10-13.
