Shayla Wallace Named 2006 Arthur Ashe Scholar

 

5/9/06 --Senior Shayla Wallace (Sumter, S.C.), a member of the women’s track and field program, was selected as a 2006 Arthur Ashe Scholar announced in the journal Diverse : Issues in Education. This distinguished honor is given to scholar-athletes of color who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better and are active in their communities.

Wallace, a Speech Language Pathology major, has earned a 3.24 gpa while helping the Blackbirds win the Northeast Conference Indoor and Outdoor titles.
She ran a season-best time of 2:26.06 in the 800-meter race at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Relays and placed seventh in the NEC Outdoor championships this past weekend in the 800-meter run crossing the line in 2:26.12.

During the indoor season, this talented distance runner took second place at the Fairleigh Dickinson Patch Dual Meet in the 1000-meter run, stopping the cock at 3:34.00. She finished the 600-meter dash in 1:48.20, claiming fifth place at FDU. She ran in five cross country races this fall, posting a season-best 22:38.1 at the Albany Invitational on Oct. 15.
