Bryan Steele Named to Jamaican National Track & Field Team

 

7/6/06 -- Long Island University senior Bryan Steele (Gaithersburg, Md.) has been named to the 2006 Jamaican National Track & Field team to compete in the 400-meter hurdles and the 1600-meter relay team at the North American Central American Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic July 7-9.

He will also compete at the Central American & Caribbean Games in Cartagena, Columbia July 25-30.

The two-time All-American took fifth place in the 400 hurdles at the Jamaican National Championships posting a time of 49.94 on June 25 in Kingston.

He finished the 400 hurdles in 49.02 at the NCAA Track Field Championships in Sacramento, setting a school record and capturing second place. His performance marked the highest finish at the NCAA Championships by an LIU athlete.

Steele was named the Northeast District Division I Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and was selected as a member of the All-Northeast Conference first team in both the 400-meter hurdles and 4x100-meter relay. The senior was tabbed the Long Island University Male Athlete of the Year for the second time (2004, 2006).

The Gaithersburg native had an outstanding season, winning the 400 hurdles at the Penn Relays, Northeast Conference and East Regionals.
