Island sophomore track athlete Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City,
Mo.) has been named to the All-Academic team by the United
States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
(USTFCCCA).
Thomas, a childhood urban education major, carries
a 3.66 GPA. In order to be selected for the honor, individuals
most post a minimum 3.2 GPA and must have qualified for either
the NCAA Indoor Championship or the Outdoor NCAA Regional
Meet.
Thomas was the Outstanding Track Performer and Most Valuable Performer
at the Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships in May. She helped
guide the women’s squad to its first NEC Outdoor title
by posting individual wins in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and
as a member of the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams. Thomas qualified
for the East Regional Meet in both the 100 and in both relays.
At the NEC Indoor Championships this past winter, Thomas won three
individual titles. She earned the Most Valuable Performer and Outstanding
Track Performer with first-place showings in the 200 and 400 and
eclipsed the previous league record in the 60 with a time of 7.65
seconds. The Blackbirds captured the indoor women’s conference
crown.
