Track Fares Well on First Day of Action at ECAC/IC4A Championships

 

5/12/07 -- Representatives of the Long Island University outdoor track and field team had a strong showing at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Two individuals and one relay team qualified for the finals of their respective events, to be held on Sunday, May 13. Sophomore Tavia Burke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) advanced to the finals in the 100-meter hurdles after turning in a 12th-place time of 14.30 in the preliminaries and a seventh-place mark of 14.10 in the semifinals.

Sophomore Andre Marcano (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) moved on in the 100-meter dash with a preliminary time of 10.58 that earned a third-place finish. The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Denele DeVerteuil (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago), junior Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City, Mo.), junior Crista Strachan (Grand Bahama, Bahamas) and junior Crystal Strachan (Grand Bahama, Bahamas) also qualified for the finals with a fifth place finish in the prelims with a time of 3:42.67.

In other action, Crystal Strachan finished 18th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash. She crossed the line at 56.38. The team of Crista Strachan, Thomas, Burke and freshman Joyce Atagwe (Latham, Md.) finished 10th in the prelims of the 4x100-meter relay with a mark of 46.68. In the men’s 4x100-meter relay, the Blackbirds’ team of Marcano, sophomore Marlon Martin (Kingstown, St. Vincent), sophomore Shavar Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica) and freshman Norman Simms (Upper Marlboro, Md.) placed 13th with a time of 41.81.
