Island University junior Aisha Thomas took home first place in
the 200-meter dash at the Great Dane Classic, held at the Armory
Track and Field Center. Thomas crossed the finish line at 24.83.
She also garnered a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter event,
finishing at 57.02. Senior Shaneqwa Warren placed ninth in the
same event with a mark of 59.03.
The Blackbirds fared well in the 500-meter dash,
with three performers earning top-10 finishes. Sophomore Denele
DeVerteuil
took second with a time of 1:15.79, while juniors Crystal Stratchan
(1:16.72) and Leslie Conley (1:17.37) finished fourth and seventh,
respectively. The women’s 4x400-meter relay captured first
place with a time of 3:50.24.
On the men’s side, both senior Steven McElligot
and freshman Dan Renahan performed well. McElligot placed fifth
in the 800-meter
run with a time of 1:59.22 and seventh in the 3,000-meter event
with a time of 8:58.38. Renahan placed seventh in the 800-meter
with a mark of 1:59.22. He also took home eighth in the 3,000-meter
run with a time of 9:10.72.
The Blackbirds will return to action on Friday, Jan. 26 at the
Terrier Classic.
