Track Competes at ECAC/IC4A Championships

3/4/07 -- The Long Island University indoor track and field team competed in the ECAC Championships in Boston with ophomore Denele DeVerteuil (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago) finishing seventh in the finals of the 500-meter dash. She crossed the finish line with a time of 1:14.40. DeVerteuil took second in the preliminary race with a time of 1:14.04 to earn a berth to the finals. In the same preliminary event, teammates Crystal Stratchan (Grand Bahama, Bahamas) and Qiana Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed 14th and 16th, respectively.

After placing ninth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Tavia Burke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) finished 10th in the semifinals with a time of 8.68. Only the top seven finishers advanced to the finals. Burke also placed 20th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.80.

Junior Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City, Mo.) finished 13th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.78. Heather Patton (Bowie, Md.) placed 13th in the triple jump with a leap of 11.78 meters.

Four members of the Long Island men’s team competed at the IC4A Championships, also in Boston. Marlon Martin (Kingstown, St. Vincent) finished 27th in the preliminary race of the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.61. Teammate Andre Marcano (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) crossed the line right behind him at 6.62.

In the 400-meter dash preliminaries, Jeremy Alvarez (Bronx, N.Y.) placed 30th. He crossed the line at 49.26. Sheldon Goffe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished 38th in the same event with a time of 50.29.
