-- The Long Island University outdoor track and field
team had a strong showing at the Maryland Invitational, with
sophomore Tavia Burke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) leading the way.
Burke captured first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time
of 14.51. In addition, the Blackbirds took home first place in
the men’s 4x100-meter relay.
Burke also placed seventh in the finals of the 100-meter dash,
crossing the finish line at 12.33. Junior Aisha Thomas (Jefferson
City, Mo.) placed third in the 400-meter dash with a mark of
56.87. In the same event, junior Leslie Conley (Baltimore, Md.)
took seventh (58.25) and classmate Maria Small (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
finished ninth (57.51). Junior Crystal Strachan (Grand Bahama,
Bahamas) garnered a 13th-place finish in the 200-meter dash with
a time of 25.84. Crista Strachan (Grand Bahama, Bahamas) placed
sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.92. Long Island finished second in
the women’s
4x400-meter relay with a mark of 3:50.55. In the high jump,
junior Shelby
Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) finished third with a leap of 1.67 meters,
while teammate Heather Patton (Bowie, Md.) finished fourth with
a 1.62-meter jump. Patton also took second in the triple jump
with a mark of 11.69 meters.
On the men’s side, the
team of Marlon Martin (Kingstown, St. Vincent), Andre Marcano
(Port-of-Spain, Trinidad
and Tobago),
Brian McManious (Kingston, Jamaica) and Norman Simms (Upper Marlboro,
Md.) took first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of
42.25 The Blackbirds also took seventh in the 4x400-meter relay
with a mark of 3:25.23.
Junior Jeremy Alvarez (Bronx, N.Y.) finished 13th in the 200-meter
dash with a time of 22.45. Senior Micah Nation (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
placed 21st in the same event with a mark of 22.83.
