Long Island Women Repeat as NEC Indoor Track Champions

2/11/07 -- For the second consecutive year, the Long Island University women’s track and field team captured the Northeast Conference indoor title. Led by junior Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City, Mo.) and sophomore Tavia Burke (St. Catherine, Jamaica), the Blackbirds took home their fourth conference crown in six seasons. Burke and Thomas were named co-Most Valuable Performer and co-Most Outstanding Track Performer. The Long Island men’s team finished seventh.

Burke took home first place in a pair of events, setting a new NEC record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57. She also won the 60-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 7.74. Thomas finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.79, while teammate Joyce Atagwe (Latham, Md.) took home third place with a time of 7.87.

Thomas also won a pair of events, crossing the finish line with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 56.83 in the 400-meter dash. She also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.89 that also qualified for the ECACs. Burke finished right behind her at 25.52.

The Blackbirds also fared well in the 800-meter run, with sophomore Denele DeVerteiul (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago) placing second (2:18.50) and freshman Aniecia Williams (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) finishing third (2:18.76). Junior Leslie Conley (Baltimore, Md.) took home second place in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:16.14, while Crystal Stratchan (Grand Bahama, Bahamas) took third with a mark of 1:16.45.

Junior Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) garnered second place in the high jump during the first day of action, leaping to a mark of 1.60 meters.

Long Island placed second in both the distance medley (12:37.61) and the 4x400-meter relay, with an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:52.69. The Blackbirds finished with 129 points, two ahead of Monmouth’s 127.

On the men’s side, the Blackbirds won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:20.31. Freshman Norman Simms (Upper Marlboro, Md.) placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.40. Junior Jeremy Alvarez (Bronx, N.Y.) also took home a third-place finish, crossing the line at 1:05.54 in the 500-meter dash.

Long Island’s 42 points gave the Blackbirds a seventh-place finish, trailing Monmouth’s 117 points.
