-- The Long Island University women’s and men’s
outdoor track and field teams had a strong showing on the first
day of the Northeast Conference Championships, with 24 athletes
qualifying for the finals in nine events. Both the men’s
and women’s teams earned points with their performances
in the 4x800-meter relay events.
On the women’s side, Aisha Thomas (12.33)
and Tavia Burke (12.45) each qualified for the finals, while
Thomas (24.90),
Crystal Strachan (25.59), Burke (25.71) and Joyce Atagwe (25.86)
earned the right to compete in the finals of the 200-meter dash.
Four Blackbirds moved on to the second day of
competition in the 400-meter dash: Crystal Strachan (55.84),
Thomas 56.07, Janel
McFarlane (57.65) and Denele DeVerteuil (56.86). In the 800-meter
dash, DeVerteuil (2:20.15), Leslie Conley (2:20.45) and Aniecia
Williams (2:20.60) qualified for Sunday’s finals. In addition,
Burke (14.96) qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles
and Qiana Smith (1:04.07) and Atagwe (1:05.00) qualified in the
400-meter hurdles.
The Blackbirds’ team of Williams, DeVerteiul,
Conley and Strachan placed second in the 4x800-meter relay
with a time of
9:30.02, earning eight points to put Long Island in eighth place.
Monmouth leads with 51.50 points.
On the men’s side, three Long Island athletes
qualified in the 100-meter dash: Andre Marcano (10.87), Norman
Simms (10.96)
and Marlon Martin (11.01). Simms (22.35) and Shavar Clarke (22.38)
moved on to day two in the 200-meter dash.
In addition, Jeremy Alvarez (48.32) qualified in the 400-meter
dash and Rodney Daniel (55.10) earned a spot in the finals of
the 400-meter hurdles.
The Long Island team of Sheldon Goffe, Steven McElligott, Kelechuku
Okoji and Dan Renahan placed seventh in the 4x800-meter relay
with a time of 8:05.61 to earn two points, putting the Blackbirds
in 10th place with two points. Monmouth is in lead with 60 points.
