-- In a busy weekend for the
Long Island University indoor track and field teams, the women’s
4x400-meter relay team stood out by capturing first place at
the New Balance
Collegiate Invitational, held at the Armory Track and Field
Center. The Blackbirds crossed the line at 3:48.16.
In other women’s action
at the Armory, sophomore Denele DeVerteuil finished eighth
in the 800-meter
run with a mark of
2:16.49. Junior Qiana Smith placed 12th in the 500-meter dash
with a time of 1:15.62, while teammates Leslie Conley and Janel
McFarlane finished 24th and 32nd, respectively.
Junior Shelby Heggie tied for
third in the high jump, leaping to a mark of 1.58 meters. On
the men’s
side, sophomore Sheldon Goffe placed 18th in the 500-meter
dash with a time of
2:16.49.
Long Island also competed at
the Giegengack Invitational, hosted by Yale, where freshman
Aniecia Williams finished 10th
in the
800-meter run with a time of 2:17.41. Graduate student Steven
McElligott raced to an 11th place finish in the same event on
the men’s side with a mark of 1:56.79.
The Blackbirds will head to the Northeast Conference Championships
on Saturday, Feb. 10.
