-- Long Island University sophomore Heather Patton
(Bowie, Md.) leapt to a fifth-place finish in the College
Women "Eastern" triple jump at the historic Penn Relays
at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Patton recorded a jump
of 11.79 meters. Manhattan's Tiina Magi garnered first place
with a mark of 12.39 meters.
In other action
on Friday, the Blackbirds team of Norman Simms (Upper Marlboro,
Md.), Shavar Clarke (Kingston,
Jamaica) ,Jeremy Alvarez (Bronx, N.Y.) and Sheldon Goffe (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) finished 35th out of 70 schools in the College Men 4x400-meter
relay. They crossed the finish line at 3:16.87, while the team
from South Carolina turned in a time of 3:07.01 to take first
place.
In action on Thursday,
Long Island's team of Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City, Mo.), Crystal
Strachan
(Grand
Bahama,
Bahamas),
Crista
Strachan (Grand Bahama, Bahamas) and Denele DeVerteuil
(Arima, Trinidad and Tobago) placed 29th out of 87 teams in
the College
Women 4x400-meter relay.
The Blackbirds crossed the finish line at 3:50.47. Louisiana
State took first place with a time of 3:32.60. In the College Women
4x100-meter relay, Long Island's team of Tavia Burke (St. Catherine,
Jamaica), Thomas and the Strachans placed 39th out of 84 schools.
They finished at 48.11, while Auburn placed first with a time
of 44.62.
The Long
Island outdoor track and field team will head to
the Northeast Conference Championships on Saturday,
May 5. The two-day event will be hosted by Monmouth.
