-- Long Island University junior Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City,
Mo.) set
a new school record in the 60-meter dash as the Blackbirds opened
up their indoor track season at the Seton Hall Open on Sunday.
Thomas took home first place, crossing the finish line at 7.64.
Thomas bested her previous mark of 7.65, set at last season’s
Northeast Conference Championships.
Sophomore Tavia Burke (St. Catherine, Jamaica)
came in fifth in the same race with a time of 7.82. Burke also
finished fifth
in the second heat (10th overall) of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing
in 10.23. In other women’s action, sophomore Heather Patton
(Bowie, Md.) took home fourth place in the long jump with a mark
of 5.16 meters. Teammate Nicole Collins (Upper Marlboro, Md.)
finished sixth with a jump of 4.75 meters. The freshman also
garnered a seventh-place finish in the high jump with a leap
of 4 feet, 10 inches.
On the men’s side, senior De Wayne Jolly
(Gaithersburg, Md.) took home fifth place in the long jump
with a 6.39 meter
performance. In the finals of the 60-meter dash, sophomore Marlon
Martin (Kingston, Jamaica) finished sixth with a time of 7.14.
The Blackbirds will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 10 at the
Fairleigh Dickinson Patch Meet.
