Indoor Track and Field Competes at Terrier Classic in Boston

 

1/27/07 -- The Long Island University indoor track and field teams had a successful performance at the Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University. The Blackbirds won a pair of races, had 10 top-five finishes and saw five performers qualify for the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Long Island also had 23 performers establish personal best marks.

Junior Aisha Thomas took home first place in the 400-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 56.67. Classmate Crystal Stratchan also garnered a first-place finish, winning the 500-meter dash in 1:16.36. Qiana Smith (1:16.77) and Janel McFarlane (1:17.25) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the same event. Sophomore Tavia Burke earned an ECAC bid in the 55-meter dash with a second-place finish of 7:12. Joyce Atagwe finished fifth in the same event with a 7.30.

Heather Patton had a fruitful day, finishing fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump. She leapt to a mark of 12.34 meters in the triple, qualifying for the ECACs, and jumped 1.63 meters in the high jump.

On the men's side, Jeremy Alvarez and Andre Marcano both qualified for the IC4A Championships. Alvarez ran a 49.14 in the 400-meter dash, finishing 22nd. Marcano ran a 6.47 in the 55-meter dash for a fifth-place finish. Sheldon Goffe finished fourth in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:05.38.

Long Island will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Metropolitan Championships.
