-- Long Island University junior
Bryan Steele (Gaithersburg, Md.) and senior Floyd Mayne (Uniondale,
N.Y.) each enjoyed
standout performances last weekend at the Jamaican National
Track & Field Championships.
Steele continued his strong running
in the 400-meter hurdles, sprinting 49.26 seconds to close
in fifth
place.
This was just 0.05 seconds off his personal best, set at the
NCAA final in which he finished sixth to become the school’s
second male All-American. Steele, who owns the 10 fastest 400-meter-hurdles
times in school history, posted LIU’s highest individual
finish at the NCAA Championships.
This is the latest milestone for Steele, who won the Northeast
Conference and IC4A championships in this event last spring.
Steele competed at the NCAA Regionals three straight years --
finishing third this season after being seeded fifth -- and advanced
to the national championships a second consecutive year.
Mayne also made his mark with a pair of third-place finishes.
He closed the 5,000-meter run in 15:33.96 and raced the 1,500-meter
run in 4:04.69.
Mayne established himself as one of the Blackbirds’ pre-eminent
distance runners. He capped his standout cross country season
by closing fourth at the NEC Championships -- LIU’s highest
finish since 1986 -- and competing at the NCAA Regionals. Mayne
also won the 5,000-meter run at the University of Albany last
January. |
