Mayne captures fourth at NEC Cross Country Championships

10/30/04 -- Senior Floyd Mayne (Uniondale, N.Y.) finished fourth overall to help Long Island’s men’s team capture third place at the Northeast Conference Cross Country Championships in Hamden, Conn.

Mayne crossed the line in 26:14.4 for the Blackbirds’ best finish since Mario Cooper placed second in 1986. Mayne has put together an impressive season, coming off back-to-back NEC Athlete-of-the-Week honors and winning the Central Connecticut State Mini-Meet on October 23.

Sophomore Craig Cocchio (Windsor, Ontario) closed 17th overall in 27:15.5 and freshman Gerardo Calixto (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also had a strong outing, taking 31st in 27:50.0.

Their efforts spurred LIU to its best conference finish since closing second in 1990 and 1991.

The women’s team was paced by junior Jaimie Smith (Burtonsville, Md.), who closed in 21:51.2. Classmate Shayla Wallace (Fayetteville, N.C.) finished in 22:42.8.
