-- Senior Floyd Mayne (Uniondale,
N.Y.) finished fourth overall to help Long Island’s
men’s
team capture third place at the Northeast Conference Cross
Country
Championships in Hamden, Conn.
Mayne crossed the line in 26:14.4 for
the Blackbirds’ best
finish since Mario Cooper placed second in 1986. Mayne has put
together an impressive season, coming off back-to-back NEC Athlete-of-the-Week
honors and winning the Central Connecticut State Mini-Meet on
October 23.
Sophomore Craig Cocchio (Windsor, Ontario) closed
17th overall in 27:15.5 and freshman Gerardo Calixto (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) also
had a strong outing, taking 31st in 27:50.0.
Their efforts spurred LIU to its best conference finish since
closing second in 1990 and 1991.
The women’s team was paced by junior
Jaimie Smith (Burtonsville, Md.), who closed in 21:51.2.
