Cross Country opens season at Stony Brook Invitational

9/3/04 -- Senior Floyd Mayne (Uniondale, N.Y.) finished in 12th place for Long Island at the season-opening Stony Brook Invitational in Kings Park, N.Y.

Mayne ran the 5,000 meter course in 16:46.7 to help the Blackbirds close in fourth place. Sophomore Craig Cocchio (Windsor, Ontario) finished in 20th place with a time of 17:25.2, junior Steven McElligott (Pierrefonds, Quebec) ran in 17:28.9 to take 22nd place and senior Isaiah Cartledge (Forestville, Md.) was 25th in 17:34.3.

The women's squad ended in fifth place and was led by junior Jaimie Smith (Burtonsville, Md.), who ran in 23:20.9. Crystal Strachan closed in 25:55.7 and junior Shayla Wallace (Fayetteville, N.C.) posted a time of 26:00.0.

LIU returns to action September 24 at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn.
