Island swept two opponents in Saturday’s doubleheader
against neighboring Northeast Conference foe,St.
Francis (NY),
3-0 (30-9, 30-10,
30-20) and non-conference adversary Georgetown,
3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-22).
The Blackbirds, taking on the Terriers
in a morning match at St. Francis (NY), were
led by senior Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.)
with seven kills and three digs. Classmate
Adela Igniska (Baia Mare, Romania) added seven
kills.
Setter Ivana
Vasiljevic
(Brcko, Bosnia & Herzegovina) chipped in
12 assists in the triumph.
Lydia Ann Harris
of St. Francis (N.Y.) posted five kills, including two service
aces and six digs.
The
Blackbirds hosted BIG EAST conference member Georgetown
in the afternoon. Senior Jade Gold (Jupiter, Fla.) led the
team
with 15 kills and .407 hitting percentage. Jackson recorded her
19th double-double (kills, digs) of the seaso with 11
kills
and 19 digs. Vasiljevic
posted a match-high 36 assists and sophomore Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen,
Germany) also had a double-double, collecting 10 kills and 13
digs.
LIU out-hit
the Hoyas .217 to .100 in the first frame. The Blackbirds
mounted
an eight
point
lead (24-16), pushing
the game
out of Georgetown’s reach. The Hoyas would cut the lead
to four with a block from Katherine Neisen and Rachel Nelson
but a Gold kill sealed the game for LIU, 30-23. In
game two, Gold and Vasiljevic connected for two consecutive
points to give the Blackbirds a 5-3 lead. An ace from Wagner,
followed by a Hoya attacking error and kill from Jackson, gave
LIU a ten point advantage they would not relinquish. Another
kill from Gold closed the second game, 30-20.
Georgetown would
not go away without a fight. The Hoyas started the third game
with an ace from Katie Nulty. The game see-sawed
back and forth with ten ties. LIU surged late in
the game, galloping to an eight point lead to take the
game and
match,
30-22.
Rachel Nelson anchored Georgetown
with 15 kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Caitlin Boland
notched 31 assists.
The
Blackbirds rise to 21-12, remaining undefeated (8-0) in
NEC play. LIU will host South Florida,
Sunday at 1:00 pm.
